Textbook and Other Course Material

All course materials are provided. We link to all materials you need and explain how to get them.

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to simulation modeling of pathogens and the immune response on the within-host level. You will learn the basic biology and immunology of several common pathogens. You will also learn about simulation models and how they can be used to study pathogen and immune response dynamics within an infected host. This course is an introductory overview course. Due to time limitations, we we will not be able to go very deep into either the biology/immunology side of things or the modeling/coding side of things. But you are certainly welcome and encouraged to dig deeper, and we will provide information and resources to allow you to learn more about the topics we cover.

Grading

This course has no grades. You will get a certificate of completion at the end.

Class Attendance

Attendance is not required, but we hope you will attend all sessions.

We also hope that you will be an active participant and ask questions, join discussions, and contribute in any way you feel willing and able.

Prerequisites

We assume you have some basic biological and computer literacy. Some of you may know a good bit of immunology, or have solid statistical, modeling or coding experience. We understand everyone will come with different skill sets. Since this is an introductory course, we try to make things as understandable as possible for everyone. That means that some of the material might be too basic for you, will others will be new to you (and likely challenging).

We “promise” that you will feel bored and you will feel lost at least once during the course 😁. We hope that you will still find the majority of the material we teach interesting and helpful. Please don’t hesitate to give us feedback during the course (in real time) if you think we are going too slow or too fast.
